Choose a Surgeon you can trust: Dr. Rod is one of a select group of surgeons who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. These board certifications require that a physician complete an additional 7 years of specialized surgical training after medical school learning the complexities of all areas of general surgery and the art of facial plastic surgery.
Minimally-Invasive Surgical Technique: The techniques in facial plastic surgery have progressively improved over the years. Newer techniques used by Dr. Rod are safer, less-invasive, have a shorter post-operative recovery period, and a lasting benefit. Most of our facelift surgeries can be performed in office and general anesthesia is not required.
Benefits of FaceLift Surgery: As we age, the skin’s elasticity degrades and the facial fat that once gave us round cheeks migrates downward and drags the skin down. These age-related changes result in:
- hollowing of the cheeks
- laxity along the jaw line (jowls) and
- looseness underneath the chin (neck wattle)
Our facelift surgery can address these signs of facial aging that often make an individual look older than they feel. The results of our facelift surgery are often dramatic and can give the patient the appearance of looking many years younger.
FaceLift Surgery Options: Dr. Rod offers variations of his facelifting surgery technique based on the individual need and desires of the patient:
- Standard FaceLift lifts and tightens the lower face (cheeks and jowls) and involves comprehensive neck correction (Neck Lift)
- Mini-FaceLift (Mini-Lift) is an option for individuals who need or desire only minor correction.
The Mini-Lift can also be referred to as a short-scar facelift or an “S-Lift” because of the shape and smaller size of the incision around the curve of the ear. Our Mini-lift is a great solution for individuals who are not ready or not in need of a more comprehensive procedure, but who wish to maintain a bright, youthful appearance. Ideal candidates for our mini-lift are those who have good skin quality and mild laxity, typically who are less than 50 years old.
Our mini-lift improves sagging of the cheeks and the lower third of the face. While minor laxity underneath the chin can be improved, severe sagging of neck and jowls is best treated with our more comprehensive standard FaceLift/Neck Lift procedure.
The surgical procedure that is right for you is best determined by a surgeon who performs all types of face-lifting surgery, such as Dr. Rod. Additional procedures are sometimes offered to our patients to enhance the result. These might include eyelid lift, brow lift, skin treatments or laser resurfacing.
The Incision: A good facelift (whether standard or mini) begins with a good incision. In the past, many surgeons used a long straight facelift incision placed in front of the ear and extending into the scalp. This incision can result in elevation of the sideburn with apparent hair loss. Because of this unnatural result, this technique is not used for our patients.
Dr. Rod’s incisions are curved and follow the natural curvatures in front of the ear. (The incision for the mini-lift is limited to just in front of the ear, while the incision for the standard FaceLift/Neck Lift extends behind the ear to allow for removal of more skin) Dr. Rod gives meticulous attention to the contour and placement of the incision in order to result in the most inconspicuous scar possible.
The Lift: Some physicians perform a facelift by just lifting and pulling the skin. This can result in an unnatural “pulled-back” look. Dr. Rod lifts and tightens not only the skin, but also the underlying muscles and supporting tissues of the lower face. This technique provides a longer lasting benefit and a more natural result. Once the incision is made, Dr. Rod elevates the skin to access the underlying tissue and then is able to tighten and reposition this supporting area. Excess skin and fat is then removed and the incision is closed with fine sutures. With the Full FaceLift/Neck Lift, additional work is performed on the neck as needed, such as liposuction and muscle tightening.
Recovery: We provide a minimally invasive surgical approach which allows for a shorter recovery time and less risk with wound healing. Temporary bruising and swelling occur, but is typically milder than patients expect. Utilizing the postoperative dressing and keeping your head elevated during sleep will promote a more rapid recovery. The “downtime” for most patients is 2 weeks. Sutures are usually removed after 10 days and patients can resume all physical activity at 3 weeks..
